Carolyn A. “Biddy” Martin

UW–Madison Chancellor, 2008-2011

Biddy Martin earned her PhD at UW–Madison in German literature in 1985 and returned to the university as chancellor from 2008 to 2011. She has held a number of leadership roles in higher education. In addition to her scholarly and teaching career at Cornell, she served as senior associate dean of arts and sciences and the university’s provost. She was the president of Amherst College from 2011 until August 2022 and is currently a president-in-residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is a member of the Harvard Corporation, Harvard’s board. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
